Shelby Township Firefighters Local 1338 Union Charities
The Shelby Township Firefighter’s Local 1338 union has a longstanding history of charitable endeavors. The local 1338 union is proud to be involved in supporting The Great Lakes Burn Camp, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Detroit Children’s Hospital and other causes that are brought to the Union’s attention by members and outside sources. Great Lakes Burn Camp The Great Lakes Burn Camp is a place for children ages 7-17 who are the victims of burn injuries to interact and meet one another for the purposes of support, developing friendships, building self esteem and to cope with and heal from their injuries. The camp gives the children an opportunity to be among others who have experienced a similar misfortune, and to build confidence and personal strength with each other’s support. The Great Lakes Burn Camp is made possible by charitable donations from burn centers, firefighters, private businesses and volunteers who donate their time to work at the camp. The association between the Shelby Township Firefighters Local 1338 and the Great Lakes Burn Camp dates back to 1999. During this time the union has raised over $90,700.00 for the camp. Each year the Shelby Firefighter’s local 1338 host’s its annual Red Hot Night Valentine’s dance. Proceeds from the event are donated to the Great Lakes Burn Camp. In 2008 alone the Red Hot Night dance raised approximately $7,000. MDA The Muscular Dystrophy Association is an organization dedicated to the research for treatment and cures of diseases affecting the nervous system. The IAFF has been a sponsor of the MDA since 1954 in which time it has donated over $275 million dollars. Each year the Shelby Twp. Firefighter’s local 1338 participates in the “Fill the Boot” program. Firefighter’s collect donations from motorists passing by at intersections in the township. In 2008 Shelby Twp. Firefighter’s donated $6,500 from a combination of collected donations and funds from the member’s own union contributions.
